How Computer Ergonomics Can Help You

The term ergonomic office is no longer just a catchphrase on the lips of the trendy. Ergonomic office standards have even been implemented in some US Governement offices. Ergonomic office products are now being sold both to individuals for home offices as well as to companies for their offices. But what is it that makes ergonomic office products so special?

Ergonomics is basically the science of design that is tailored to fit the requirements of a human and the task they need to perform. If, for example, the human worker must sit for many hours a day, it is important that the design of the chair supports the body properly. As many doctors and chiropractors have stated, most of the pain experienced by office workers was due to badly designed products and misalignment of good posture.

Perhaps the most vivid example of an ailment caused directly by office work is Carpal Tunnel syndrome. Carpal Tunnel is one of the most common ailments reported by people who spend most of their day working with a keyboard and monitor. The repetitive motion of typing while the hands are not properly aligned and positioned causes the tendons in the wrists to become inflamed and painful. Carpal Tunnel can become a chronic condition if not dealt with, and a slew of cases from the 90’s nearly overwhelmed the medical community.

Carpal Tunnel was a new ailment, brought in by the rise in computer related jobs. Throughout the 80’s and 90’s, Carpal Tunnel was most commonly found among secretaries and programmers, as well as other computer-heavy job descriptions. The ergonomic keyboard first appeared on the market in the mid 90’s and was popularized by Microsoft. A new, revolutionary design tilted the keyboard body in a V shaped angle, thus enabling fingers to reach keys more easily and with less stress to the wrists. Relief, or at least the first wave of it, had arrived.

Like in all things in the technology age, a new generation of ergonomic keyboards was born from better design and technology. Adjustable keyboards became the rage, allowing the user to adjust the keyboard at exactly the right angle for them. Other ergonomic keyboards included a built-in trackball, fully separated keyboards, and other gadgets and designs.

Soon after the ergnomic keyboard appeared, so did the first ergonomic mouse. The normal, everyday mouse is as hard on the wrist as is the normal keyboard. Ergonomic mice shift the angle in which they’re held to provide maximum support for the wrist and hand, thus reducing the possibility of Carpal Tunnel. The ergonomic mouse can look a tad whacky in its design, but it delivers ongoing comfort that cannot be found in the traditional mouse design. Design ranges from mouse boxes to upright mice.

There are other ailments that are directly related to computer use. As computers became more commonplace everywhere, these ailments rose dramatically. Neck and shoulder pain was especially bothersome to many people who spent hours in front of a computer monitor. Their desk wasn’t adjustable, nor was the monitor positioned in the correct angle. The basic adjustment of a monitor for an individual was usually overlooked by office managers and administrators, causing a great deal of suffering to many people.

Adjustable computer monitors with ergonomic design solved some of the problem. Monitor risers replaced telephone books when people wished to adjust the angle in which they viewed their monitors. Since many of them had a down-slope, they were much more effective than the telephone books. Laptop stands of all kinds helped people all over the world avoid the stress inflicted on the body by leaning into a laptop. Several implements such as monitor stakers and flat screen arms appeared on the market, supplying the demand for products that can help monitors be adjusted perfectly for each individual user.

Perhaps one of the least thought about ailment is the headache produced by monitor glare. Human eyes are drastically affected by the constant high-speed flickering of monitors. Our eyes work much harder reading from a monitor than they do reading from paper, due to this flickering and glare, which makes for tired eyes and headaches.

Glare monitors were developed in the early 90’s to reduce these headaches and have come a long way since then. A good anti-glare product should obviously reduce the glare from the screen. It should also sharpen the monitor image by reducing visible flickering, thus reducing eye fatigue and headaches.

There are, however, ways to avoid the ailments that are inflicted upon the computer generation, even though our lives revolve around these machines nowadays. Using ergonomic chairs, adjustable desks, as well as the multitude of other products that employ computer ergonomics can literally be a life-saver for all those cursed with the aches and pains associated with any computer job. Whether you work in an office or have a home office, make it an ergonomic office. Your entire body will thank you, and may even give you a standing ovation!

Understanding Behavior Disorders

Many people often suffer with effects of a behavior disorder and don’t even know it. It can be difficult to tell the difference between “normal” and abnormal feelings. The behavioral category contains thousands of disorders, many which share the same symptoms. Some of the most common disorders are: obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety, and post traumatic stress disorder.

In order to fully grasp the range of severity of behavior disorders, we are going to discuss one in light detail. The disorder is called Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, also known as OCD. Doctors have found proof that this is actually a genetic disorder, meaning that it is passed through relatives, such as grandparents and parents. OCD is a lot more common than one might believe.

As with any disorder, OCD can be tough to live with at times. A person who suffers with OCD usually deals with repetitive habits every day. OCD can range greatly in the severity of a case. For example, a “mild” case could be a person who has to have every picture, nik-nak, and piece of furniture in the house set at a certain angle or position. One might just assume they are a very tidy person. However, a sever case has more of a life-altering result, in which the person feels they have to control every aspect of the day to run at a strict routine, and when one piece of this routine becomes altered, that person may simply remain in their home the rest of the day, sometimes in severe panic.

The main concern isn’t that someone simply washes their hands, it is the over-abundance of the action that shows signs of OCD. There is a fine line, but if you believe you may suffer from this disorder, or that another family member may, it is recommended to get tested as soon as you can just to make sure.

Signs of behavior disorders can differ greatly and affect many in different ways. This makes pinpointing any disorder particularly difficult. If you feel like you may suffer from a behavior disorder then please get tested to find out if you do.

Aside from OCD, there are disorders which effect ones social skills. If you believe you suffer from any social disorder symptoms, please contact a doctor for confirmation.

Final Expense Insurance – A Great Plan For My Future

With my retirement has come a shift of focus as well.  For many, many years now, I’ve poured my money into a 401K to prepare myself for this day and now that this day has arrived, I’ve decided to take my financial security outlook into the future once again.

I wanted to make sure I protected my family for when it was my time to pass. The very last experience a family member should have when faced with the loss of a loved one is the additional burden of expenses, so made myself responsible for finding a way to help.

That’s when I came across final expense insurance.  It is exactly what it sounds like.An insurance policy insuring that when it is my time there won’t be a large debt left weighing down my family.

I’m in good health at the moment and have a minimum of debt, yet nearly 60 years of experience has taught that there are a few curveballs still to be expected still s.  And as medical care costs only continue to rise, even my last few days could place a heavy financial burden on my family.

By taking out a policy for final expense insurance, I know I have them covered which puts my mind at ease. We’ve seen the ads on television talking about funeral costs and so on, but they are a load of rubbish.

Out of curiosity I looked into funeral prices only to find there are no recent, solid numbers to be found. Moreover, insurance programs like that provide insufficient protection for my family in my opinion.Even had I chosen a burial policy or something similar what would cover my other expenses?

I think it’s fair to say that none of us know when our time has come so it’s not something that we can easily prepare for.  We can’t call up our utility company and tell them it will be ok to shut the water off on the 20th of next month as I won’t be around any longer.

I plan on breathing for quite a bit longer to be truthful.  But by taking out a line of final expense insurance, I know when my plan finally fades, my expenses won’t be rolled over and onto my loved ones.  This, by itself, means it’s some of the most valuable insurance I’ve ever carried.

LOWER BACK MUSCLE PAIN – AN INTRODUCTION

AN INTRODUCTION TO LOWER BACK MUSCLE PAIN

Many musculoskeletal problemsare often easily diagnosed and successfully treated, unfortunately lower back pain is not one of them. The cause can sometimes be elusive, therefore the diagnosis can be incorrect and then the wrong treatments ensues.

PAIN AND WHAT IT TELLS YOU

“Pain is a signal something is wrong.”

It the lower back muscle pain is short lasting and mild it may be nothing to worry about, on the flip side if it severe and lasts for a few days up to a week or more, you body is most likely trying to tell you something is not right. Failing to listen to your body’s signals can problems worse, extending the duration of low back pain, often for unnecessary durations.

General guides as to when to refer to a doctor are:

If the pain is severe

If there is swelling

If you hear a cracking or snapping at the time of the injury

If you cannot perform your normal day to day duties

If there is nausea, dizziness, blurred vision, paralysis, weakness or disturbed function following an accident or injury.

If the pain continues beyond 7-10 days.1

WHAT IS LOW BACK PAIN?

Lower back muscle painaffects the muscles in the lower part of the back. It can be described as:

· Acute if it is less than 6 weeks

· Sub-acute if it 6-12 weeks

· Chronic if it is more than 12 weeks

Many people suffer from low back pain, costing millions in lost work as well as medical and insurance resources. Lower back muscle pain is a very common back complaint and effects four out of five people at some point in their lives. Although most low back pain will heal out within a few days to a few weeks.

LOWER BACK PAIN – AMERICAN STATISTICS

·      80% of society will suffer back pain of some type

Lower back muscle pain

·      88% will be asymptomatic in 6 weeks

·      98% in 24 weeks

·      99% in 52 weeks

·      97% of causes are unknown

·      2% attributed to disc problems

·      29% will require conservative treatment only

·      1% will require surgery

·      The rest will recover spontaneously2

RISK FACTORS – LOW BACK PAIN

Postural deformities and leg length, in general, don’t seem to predispose to lower back pain. Studies of static work postures indicate an increased risk of low back pain sitting with a bent over working posture seems to carry significant risk, for example sitting in a car for more than half a work day can lead to three times the risk of disc herniation.3

·      Physically heavy, static work postures

·      Frequent bending and twisting, lifting and forceful movements

·      Repetitive work and vibrations

·      Tallness leads to increased risk

·      Sciatica is more frequent in obese people

·      Weak trunk muscles and decreased endurance

·      Coughing – leading to decreased blood supply to essential areas

·      Social factors i.e alcoholism, history of divorce, level of education, history of depression.4

SYMPTOMS OF LOW BACK PAIN

Low back pain means a pain or ache somewhere between the bottom of the ribs at the back and the top of the legs. That may begin suddenly or follow obvious strain or injury or it can come ‘out of the blue’.

It is possible that pain may also travel for example down the buttocks to the foot. It can be worse bending and is often much worse when sitting. Pain that is agonizing can be experienced when rolling over in bed or possibly sitting up. Sneezing or coughing can aggravate the pain. Back muscles can also go into painful spasms.

Lower back muscle pain may be combined with pain in the leg traveling down the knee. This is otherwise called sciatica, because the main nerve in the leg (the sciatica nerve) is irritated by pressure on it..

If in doubt consult a health care practitioner such as a doctor, chiropractor, physiotherapist an osteopath or myotherapist.

GUIDELINES

The first thing to rule out is other obvious conditions which may cause back pain. You really need to be on the watch out for ‘red flags’ or warning signs, which can be factors that may require more rapid treatment. They may point to something more serious than a mechanical problem. If any number of these apply to you it is recommended that you see your doctor.

·      You are younger than 2o when you first get back pain

·      You are older than 55 when you first get back pain

·      The pain follows a violent injury

·      The pain is constant and getting worse

·      You have had or have cancer

·      You are on steroids

·      You are drug abuser

·      You have HIV

·      You are generally unwell

·      You have significant and unexplained weight loss

·      You have significant trouble bending forward over a period of time

·      You have developed nervous system problems – numbness, loss of power etc

·      You have developed an obvious structural deformities

·      If the pain continues over 4 weeks
